FACTS ABOUT THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
1. Indpendence Day commemorates the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted into congress.
2. The Declaration of Independence was a document whereby the 13 American Colonies declared they were no longer part of the British Empire.
3. The Declaration of Independence wasn’t completely signed until August 2, 1776.
4. Congress appointed a Committe of Five people to draft the constitution on June 11, 1776. They were Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman and Robert Livingston.
5. The original title of the Declaration of Independence was, “A Declaration by the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress assembled.”
6. John Hancock has the biggest signature on the Declaration of Independence.
7. The Declaration of Independence begins:
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

FACTS ABOUT THE AMERICAN FLAG
9. The flag designed was adopted from the Marine Committee of the Second Continental Congress at Philadelphia as per, “Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation. ”
10. The first national observance of Flag Day was June 14, 1877.
11. The American flag is made up of 13 horizontal stripes, alternating red and white, and 50 five-pointedwhite stars on blue background.
12. During the Apollo 11 space mission, astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, placed the first American flag on the moon.
13. There are many points of American flag care and etiquette, or flag code of conduct. The flag should never touch the ground and if it is flying at night, it is to be illuminated. The flag should never be worn as clothing or made into home decor as by use in bedding or drapery.
14. The flag first appeared on a postage stamp in 1926.
FIREWORKS TRIVIA
15. Fireworks date back to the 10th century and they originated in China.
16. Peony, Ring, Willow, Palm, Spider, Fish, Salute, Roman Candle and Cake all refer to types of fireworks effect.
17. 2012 will mark Macy’s 36th annual fireworks event and will feature over 40,000 fireworks.
STATUE OF LIBERTY TRIVIA
18. The Statue of Liberty was constructed in 1875. It was transported via the ship, Isere, (nearly sinking several times) and arrived in New York on June 17, 1885. Lady Liberty was finally dedicated on October 28, 188.
19. Lady Liberty stands 305 feet tall, ground to torch, on Liberty Island in New York Harbor.
20. The Statue of Liberty was designed by Frédéric Bartholdi – the statue was a gift to the United States from the people of France.
21. The torch of the Statue of Liberty was replaced in 1984 by a copper torch coated in 24k gold leaf.
22. The Statue of Liberty holds a tablet upon which is written, in roman numerals, the date July 4, 1776 which is July IV MDCCLXXVI.

23. There are many songs written in honor of this land including, America the Beautiful, O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, for purple mountains majesty.” It was written by Katharine Lee Bates.
24. Strange but true – 3 presidents have died on July 4 – Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and James Monroe.
