Watermelon makes me smile! And I don’t need a holiday to consume my share of this sweet summer treat. But on National Watermelon Day it’s a pretty good excuse to eat your weight in watermelons or try some new watermelon recipes – like watermelon cupcakes, watermelon martinis, or watermelon with basil and mint salad. It’s a day to eat watermelon and food that tastes like watermelon, and honor anything that has watermelon in the ingredients.

Watermelons are characterized by their thick rind. They are a vine-like flowering plant originating from Southern Africa. China is the world’s largest producer of watermelons.
Bet you didn’t know that pink isn’t the only color a watermelon can be on the inside. They can also be white, red, orange and yellow. They can have seeds or be seedless watermelon. Watermelon is in the cucurbitaceae family for those who like to know lineage.
Watermelons are the perfect summer snack to eat outside because they can get messy if you eat them off the rind. Watermelon is delicious in salads or paired with savory bites. Watermelon juice is yummy to drink. Add watermelon juice to any beverage, cocktail, lemonade or drink to freshen it up or juice it for a straight up watermelon juice.
